Volunteer opportunity

Oregon Ballet Theatre School is seeking volunteers to assist with distribution of materials throughout Lake Oswego, West Linn, Milwaukie, Oregon City, Gladstone, Tigard, Tualatin, Happy Valley and Clackamas County. We are in need of 6-10 volunteers between June 21-July 1, 2017 who can commit to 3-5 hours of distributing materials to businesses and public bulletin boards. There are several neighborhoods and areas to choose from and you can do it on your own time, though it would need to be times when most businesses are open. Please provide your own transportation. In exchange for your service, SOBT is offering two tickets to Oregon Ballet Theatre’s performances of “Rhapsody in Blue”, October 7-14, 2017. Please contact Rachel Närhi, West Linn Branch Manager at sobtwestlinn@obt.org if you’re interested.

The final week of the 2016-17 Annual Session was June 5 through June 10.

Portland Student End of Year Conferences - Levels 3-6

Dear Level 3–6 Students,

The faculty of SOBT will be conducting brief student conferences the week of June 5. These are informal conferences that are just for the student and their primary teachers.

We hope these provide students with a year-end perspective and helpful information for the summer months.

ASP Viewing Party!

Dear SOBT Families,

We are excited to hold the first official viewing of the 2017 Annual School Performance on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM in Studio 2 at The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Students in Levels 3 through OBT2 are invited to attend. Students in Levels 1 and 2 will have the opportunity to watch the video during one of their regularly scheduled Saturday classes. This is a student only function.

As a special thank you to the students for their hard work during this year’s fund drive, SOBT will be catering  a portion of the event from Elephants Delicatessen. We will provide a variety of warm main course items as well as vegetables and finger foods. As we know many students enjoy preparing dishes for this annual event, we invite students to bring dessert items, drinks, or appetizers to share with others. Sign-up in advance is not necessary for these items. The total attendance anticipated is 70 students, so please plan your dish to serve around 10 to 15 people. 

Please note the class schedule has been adjusted on this day and classes for all levels (3 – OBT2) will take place from 4:00 – 5:30 PM to accommodate the party.

2017 ASP Note from Mr. Jones

Dear SOBT Students and Families,

As I reflect upon the Annual School Performance I am left with vivid images of brilliant dancing, jubilant faces onstage, and the absolute professionalism of the students of The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. I was so very impressed with the performances this past weekend and am extremely proud. Each dancer is to be commended for their hard work and their contribution to the ASP; what really shown through so beautifully this past weekend was not just individuals, but the high quality of the entire school.

My many thanks go out to the students for their inspired dancing, to the parents for their patience and dedication during this busy time, to the teachers for all they do day in and day out, to James and Colleen for keeping the school humming along smoothly, to Rachel for her good work in West Linn, to the volunteers who give so generously of their time, and to the entire OBT organization for supporting the school.

I hope everyone has been able to rest the last few days and is feeling recharged as we enter the home stretch of the school year.

Congratulations to all the dancers and families of SOBT for making this year’s ASP so extraordinary and memorable.

SOBT will celebrate its post-ASP recess this week, per usual.

There will be no Level 1A - OBT2 classes Monday, April 24 - Wednesday, April 26, 2017. All classes will resume on Thursday, April 27.

Youth Jazz at West Linn

SOBT's West Linn school has a great Youth Jazz class meeting Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm and we need a few more friends to fill out our class. Is your dancer interested? Do you know another young person who might want to try it out? No experience necessary.
 
Students ages 7–11 years old explore the fundamentals of jazz dance to popular music favorites. It’s super fun, it’s active. The dancers love the big jumps, turns, and leaps to the music they love. Current SOBT students receive a 10% discount.

2017 Summer Camp for Younger Students - Registration Open

Registration for The School of OBT’s 2017 Summer Camp is now open for current SOBT students.

The Summer Camp encompasses Pre-Ballet 3/4 through Level 2 at the both the Portland and West Linn locations.

As in year's past the Portland school will hold the Pre-Pointe Workshop from July 18 through August 10. This workshop is open to all current Level 2 students and is an excellent opportunity to continue to develop strength and technique. This workshop is also suitable for boys as many of the strengthening exercises will benefit all dancers in other aspects of their technique such as turns and jumps. Please note, participation in this program does not automatically ensure a student will begin pointe in the Annual Session in the fall.

Returning to the school's West Linn location are the week long Themed Camps. Explore the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland, the pure beauty of Swan Lake and the bravery of Peter and the Wolf. Enroll in one, two or all three camps for a summer filled with dance and story-telling.

Students should register for summer classes in the level they are currently registered for in the Annual Session, unless otherwise informed by their teacher. Students will be informed of level advancements for next year’s annual session during the summer months.

You do not need to complete a new registration form for the Summer Camp, though this is an excellent time to update the School with any changes to your family’s contact information, child’s permission to leave unescorted, permission to be picked up by individuals, etc.  

Registration for all programs is limited and on a first come basis. The registration deadline is April 29.
