2016 ASP Viewing Potluck: L3 - OBT2

Dear SOBT Families,

We are excited to hold the 2016 Annual School Performance Viewing on Friday, May 27, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM in Studio 2 at The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre. Students in Levels 3 through OBT2 are invited to attend. Students in Levels 1 and 2 will have the opportunity to watch the video during one of their regularly scheduled classes. This is a student only function.

As in years past, in addition to viewing the video we will hold a potluck. Please bring whatever dish you would like, taking into consideration food allergies. Sign-up in advance is not necessary. The total attendance anticipated is 70 students, so please plan your dish to serve around 10 to 15 people. Thank you in advance for contributing to the potluck.

Please Welcome Colleen Hanlon to SOBT

Dear SOBT Families,

I would like to welcome Colleen Hanlon to the school staff as our new Registrar / Children’s Coordinator.  Colleen recently moved to Portland from Tampa, Florida, where she held a similar position at America’s Ballet School / Tampa City Ballet.  Colleen has also worked as stage manager for the University of South Florida, Tampa.  Her professional experience relates directly to both the administrative and backstage support this position requires, which is one of the many reasons we’re so excited she is joining our team.  Colleen is a dancer herself (she even danced in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker as a child with the Miami City Ballet!) and earned a B.A. in dance with a concentration in ballet from the University of South Florida.

As Colleen transitions in, we will say good-bye to Abby, who has been our temporary receptionist for the last few months.  Abby’s last day will be April 23.  I want to personally thank Abby for the fantastic job she’s done and want to wish her the very best in her future endeavors.
For the next week and a half Colleen will be working between the studio and the Newmark Theatre, and beginning the week of April 25, she’ll be stationed at the front desk.  Please feel free to introduce yourselves to Colleen and welcome her to the SOBT family.

The Annual School Performance is recommended for ages 3 and up. 

You will need to purchase a seat for each person attending regardless of age.

All SOBT students who are cast will be in both performances for the Grand Etude.  Additional casting will be posted later this week for upper level students.

2015/16 OBT Company Season

Families of currently enrolled SOBT students receive a 25% discount on Areas 1 through 4. Tickets can purchased in person or by phone. This discount does not apply toward ASP ticket purchases. Please see box office staff with any questions.

2016 ASP - Theater Forms

For the 2016 ASP we require that each student return a Newmark Theater Release form and Volunteer Chaperone form. You may print copies of these forms from the blog by clicking here.

These forms must be returned to SOBT by Saturday, April 9. A student will not be allowed to enter the Newmark until these forms are received.

Pick-up Policy

This is a friendly reminder that students in Children's Beginning Ballet and Levels 1 -6 should be picked-up from outside the main entrance to the Oregon Ballet Theatre building after all classes and rehearsals. 

On any given day the school can service up to 200 students, and we do not have a reception area to accommodate anywhere near that many people.  Because of this, the only way to be fair is to ask all parents to follow the same guidelines. Once we allow one parent to wait/observe from inside our small lobby area, we have to provide this same opportunity for all parents.  This just isn't possible.

This policy is also for your student's safety as we need one point of check-out for students and that is with Abby or Shea at the front door.  Parents who collect their children inside the building have been tending to bypass checking out with the receptionist, which leaves us not knowing if that child has indeed been picked-up.

Lastly, a word on our no observation policy.  We feel very strongly students work and learn best in an environment where parents aren't watching their child and/or their classmates. SOBT provides observation days for parents two weeks per year and additional days in the summer; we encourage all parents to attend these classes.

2016 ASP - Rehearsal Break Policy

Please remember that for those students who have more than a 75 minute break between their regular classes and rehearsal, or between rehearsal and rehearsal, they will need to be picked up.

Students may return 30 minutes prior to their next scheduled rehearsal.

2016 ASP Skirt Orders & Cleaning

We are fast approaching this year’s ASP on April 23rd & 24th in the Newmark Theatre.

As with last year, the performance’s culminating ballet, A Grand Étude, showcases over 100 students. Students in levels 1 through 4 will wear their class leotard.  We ask all female students to wear a matching skirt.  The School of OBT will place the order, however, we ask all participants to pay for their skirt to cover costs.

These skirts will not only serve as a beautiful costume for the ASP, but after the performances everyone may keep their skirt and students will be permitted to wear their skirts for certain classes in the summer programs.

If it is not possible for you to purchase a skirt, please email schoolofobt@obt.org and we will see what we can arrange.  In addition, should you want to purchase one or more skirts for other students, your assistance is gladly accepted & greatly appreciated.  You may also donate used skirts if your student owns one that no longer fits or she has moved up a level. 

Many students may still have their matching skirt from last year. If this is the case, we ask you to bring your skirt to the studio by Monday, March 28^th, so wardrobe can collect and prepare them for the performance.  Please be sure your name is on the tag before turning in your skirt. These can be given to James Holstad, School Administrator or Shannon Goffe, Production Administrator. 

Skirts for levels 1 & 2 cost $12.00, level 3 skirts cost $18.75, and level 4 skirts cost $23.80. Please see the Pages section of the SOBT blog for the order form.  Students only need to order a skirt if they do not already own one for their current level.  Payment is due by Saturday, April 2, 2016. You can deliver payment to James or Shannon. Please return your completed order form with payment by cash or check payable to The School of OBT.

IMPORTANT SOBT Update: Week of January 4, 2016

Dear SOBT Families,

A Happy New Year to all! I know everyone is as eager as I am to get started in our new facility, unfortunately we have a slight delay and classes will now begin on Thursday, January 7, 2016.

The only major element not in place in the new building is our new state-of-the-art dance floors from Harlequin. The floors were to be installed over the course of this week, yet due to inclement weather the crew from Harlequin was not able to get out of Dallas as scheduled. This, coupled with the holiday travel rush, will make it impossible for the crew to get to Portland until this Saturday. Harlequin is now on schedule to complete the job early next week and we will be ready to begin classes on Thursday.

I am very sorry for the delay and any inconvenience this may cause, but I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding. As we do not have any “snow days” built into our schedule, we will forgo our regular post Annual School Performance break from April 25 -27, 2016, in order to make-up for the missed classes. For the Monday Pre-Ballet 5/6 class, there will be a make-up class on Monday, March 21, 2016.

Though there will be no classes this Monday through Wednesday, I would like to invite families in to tour the building those days from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM. I will be there with other members of the staff and faculty to guide students and families through the space, and answer any questions.

Again, thank you in advance for your understanding and your continued support of SOBT. I look forward to creating many wonderful memories in our new space in 2016 and in the years to come.

West Linn Open House This Saturday

Dear SOBT Families,

I want to invite everyone to an open house of our new satellite school in West Linn this Saturday, December 19, from 10:00am – 12:00pm. 

This is SOBT’s first satellite location in its 26 year history and we’re excited to share it with the greater SOBT family.  Please join me on Saturday for refreshments and to celebrate our expansion.

2016 SI Auditions at OBT

For Level 3 Students through OBT2,

In the Pages section of the blog is a list of 2016 Summer Intensive program auditions which will be held at OBT's studios. The School of OBT is simply providing this information to interested students and is in no way endorsing any of these programs.

As with all Summer Intensive plans, it is requested that students seek advice from Mr. Jones prior to auditioning or registering for a program. You may do so by e-mailing the School at schoolofobt@obt.org.

SOBT Lockers - Level 3 through Apprentices

Attention Level 3 Students through Apprentices,

With the close of the SOBT 2015 Fall term, and OBT's move to our new building we ask that students who have used a locker in the SOBT dressing rooms remove all personal belongings and personal locks, and see School Reception for wet wipes to wipe down the locker. After 2:30 PM on Saturday, December 5 any locks still in place will be cut and personal belongings left will be placed in lost and found, and donated.

Also, any belongings still in the lost and found bins will be donated. Please take a few minutes to look through these items in case one of your belongings has been placed there.
