SOBT closed on Friday

Due to the icy conditions, SOBT will remain closed on Friday, December 9.  All classes including the morning adult class have been canceled.

 

Nutcracker rehearsals will proceed as scheduled at the Keller, but please check the OBT Young Dancer blog frequently for any updates:

Nutcracker Dress Rehearsal Canceled

 

The Nutcracker dress rehearsal for Thursday evening has been canceled due to inclement weather. 

 

Dismissal for students will begin at 4:15pm at the stage door.  We hope to completely vacate the theater by 4:30pm.

NO CLASSES 12.8.2016

All SOBT classes in both Portland and West Linn have been canceled for Thursday, December 8, due to the impending winter storm.

 

As of Wednesday evening, all Nutcracker rehearsals on Thursday at The Keller Auditorium will proceed as scheduled.  Please check the OBT Young Dancer Blog for any and all Nutcracker related updates.

SOBT - 2016 Winter Break - 12/12/16 to 1/2/17

The School of OBT, both Portland and West Linn, will be on Winter Break from classes December 12, 2016 through January 2, 2017.

Classes will resume Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

2017 Annual School Performance - Committment Forms

Dear SOBT Level 1 through OBT2 Families,
 
The School of OBT is preparing for the 2017 Annual School Performance (ASP). The ASP is open to all students enrolled in Levels 1A through OBT2.
 
Participation in the ASP is strongly encouraged, and mandatory for all scholarship recipients, and OBT2 dancers.
 
The 2017 Performance Commitment Form is required for participation. If you choose not to participate, this form still needs to be returned indicating that you will not be participating. Please complete the form and return it by Saturday, December 3, 2016, to the SOBT reception desk.

SOBT Volunteer Opportunity

The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre is seeking volunteers to assist with distribution of materials throughout Portland and Clackamas county. We are in need of 6 to 10 volunteers between November 22 - December 17 who can commit to 3 to 5 hours of distributing materials to businesses and public bulletin boards.

There are several neighborhoods and areas to choose from, and you can do it on your own time, keeping in mind business operation hours. You will need to provide your own transportation. This could easily be combined with your holiday shopping or errands.

In exchange for your service, SOBT is offering two tickets to OBT’s production of “Swan Lake”. Please contact Rachel Närhi, West Linn Branch Manager, at sobtwestlinn@obt.org if interested.

FREED Pointe Shoe Fittings

Dear SOBT Students and Parents,

The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre would like to remind you that this Thursday - Saturday (October 27 – 29), FREED of London is sending two of their pointe shoe fitters to our school. FREED’s fitters travel all over the nation fitting students and professional dancers for their pointe shoes. All students in Levels 3 – 6 are eligible to sign up for fittings. Time slots are on a first come basis and will last 20 minutes. You can find the sign - up sheet with Colleen at the front desk. Wednesday, October 26, 2016.  This is an optional event, but it is highly recommended that students take advantage of this opportunity. It never hurts to be refitted to make sure you are in the correct pair of shoes.  FREED is the official pointe shoe of Oregon Ballet Theatre and The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre.

**All fittings will be held in Studio 3. Please remember to bring the pointe shoes you are currently wearing as well as any accessories (i.e. toe pads, spacers, etc.). Wear convertible tights.

Halloween at SOBT - 10/31/16

A message from Mr. Jones:

All students in levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and OBT2 are invited to don a costume to class on Monday, October 31, 2016.

Costumes should allow for the perfect Pirouette, the grandest Grande Plie, the biggest Battement, and should not interfere with any range of motion or cover your face (no masks). Also, we need to be aware of our younger dancers who will be here on Halloween; no gory costumes, please!

Come one, come all, to class in your finest garments, your scariest suits, your frilliest fineries on Halloween!

How to Make the Perfect Ballet Bun

Our friends at The Washington Ballet in Washington, DC made these helpful videos on “How to Make the Perfect Ballet Bun”. Making a ballet bun takes the right supplies and a bit of practice. Do not be discouraged if it does not work the first few times. You will want to use a lot of bobby pins and a hairnet. 

A reminder that snoods, decorative bun covers, ribbons, and ornaments are not allowed at SOBT.
