October 31st & November 1st - Costume Days
Costumes encouraged for all students. Costumes must permit unrestricted movement and should not cover the face (no Halloween masks). Please refrain from any costumes which promote violence (no weapons of any kind). Ballet slippers and secured hair are still required.

November 2-4 Silly Dress Days
Tights and leotards for female identifying students and tights and leotard/shirts for male identifying students. Skirts may be worn. Students can choose colors that are not the current dress code. Attire must be fitted as per the usual dress code and include ballet slippers or pointe shoes. Fun socks worn under slippers, secured but silly hair, and make-up are examples of acceptable creative "silliness".

OBT School Announcement - School Director, Katarina Svetlova

After a national search, OBT is pleased to announce the appointment of Katarina Svetlova to school director effective immediately. Svetlova has been serving as interim school director since May.

The school director search committee was comprised of all Board members on OBT’s school committee, Peter Franc and Thomas Bruner. Applicants meeting minimum qualifications were reviewed by every committee member. Four applicants were invited to interview, and two finalists were selected for day-long onsite interviews. Throughout the search process, Svetlova remained the top candidate. When our second finalist took a position elsewhere, the search committee unanimously agreed to continue proceeding with Svetlova’s candidacy. During her day-long interview Svetlova was reviewed positively by parents, school staff, and staff from other OBT departments.

Svetlova brings an impressive resume to OBT, where her professional career began. After seven years as principal dancer with OBT, Katarina began her international career as a principal dancer with Deutsche Oper Am Rhein Ballett in Germany. While touring throughout Europe and Asia, Svetlova performed in a wide range of classical and contemporary works, winning Artist of the Year in Dusseldorf. Katarina returned to the states and began sharing her love of dance through teaching throughout the Pacific Northwest before opening her own school, Dance From the Heart PDX. In her ten years as owner, choreographer and sole teacher, Katarina has served over 900 students. In addition to excellence in training, Svetlova is dedicated to fostering a healthy and inclusive culture that reminds us all that dance is for everyone.

April 11 - Inclement Weather Closure

We hope you are all staying warm and safe. OBT School is closed for all classes today, April 11, due to inclement weather.

 

A reminder of the school’s inclement weather policy: 

 

OBT School follows Portland Public School District’s decisions regarding inclement weather closures or delays.

• If the school district closes for the entire day then OBT School will not hold either morning or evening classes.
• If the school district closes early and/or cancels evening activities, then OBT School will not hold evening classes, including Pre-Ballet, Preparatory Division and Adult Workshops.
• If the school district has a late start then OBT School will not hold morning classes, including the Preprofessional Division.
• In the event that PPS does not close, open late or release early, then OBT School will proceed with classes, unless otherwise stated, and we ask that families use caution when deciding whether or not to send their child to class. No student will be penalized if they do not attend class due to inclement weather. Please notify the school by phone or e-mail if the student will not attend classes that day.
