How to obtain High School PE Credit

Mike Weddle, a volunteer member of OBT's School Board Committee, has worked with many local school districts and schools to foster initiatives that will allow high school students to receive credit for PE, art or as an elective by attending classes at OBT School. This exemption is not automatic and will only be given if a student requests it. For most schools it will be a new process, so if anyone experiences any trouble, please contact OBT School and we will contact the school. Below you will find specific information for each school or school district on how to navigate the process. Newberg and North Clackamas school districts are currently not on the list. If you attend school at either of these districts and need support in obtaining PE credit for the classes you take at OBT School please contact us.

Obtaining High School Credit for PE, Art, and Elective classes
Each school district in the Portland/Metro area has a slightly different process for getting high school credit for these classes. Students should realize that the credit requirement is not being waived. Rather, the student needs to demonstrate proficiency in the subject area. This will undoubtedly require some sort of documentation – a journal, written report or presentation. The students will also need to work with their school counselor and a teacher in the appropriate subject area to determine what will be needed for this independent study.

Portland Public Schools (Lincoln, Grant, Cleveland) - As of February 2019, PPS is no longer granting PE credit for ballet classes. Should you have any questions please contact your school counselor or administrator.

West Linn H.S. – Students can earn “Proficiency-based credit” for PE. Students should talk to the counselor who will direct the student to VP Mark Martens to pick up the form. There will be some sort of presentation involved describing the work done at OBT School. Several students are already doing this for other activities. They do not have a means in place for art or elective credit. I would talk to the elective dance teacher or the art teachers and ask if it is possible to do an independent study. This has not been done before at West Linn.

Southridge H.S. (Beaverton) - There is a process in the Beaverton School District for students to get proficiency-based credit for PE, art and electives. There is a form to fill out available in Mr. Healy’s office for the form.

Lakeridge H.S. (Lake Oswego) - Students must take two semesters of PE. All students take the first semester in their 9th or 10th grade year. The second semester can be passed with a proficiency-based credit earned for outside activities in their 11th or 12th grade year. At this point they have only done this for sports, but they are willing to negotiate for ballet classes. The school requires one credit of art. Students should be able to negotiate with their counselor for proficiency-based credit as well.

Clackamas H.S. – There is no official board-approved process at his time. Students should talk to their counselor.

Newberg H.S. – There is no official board-approved process at his time. Students should talk to their counselor.

Jesuit High School – Students must take all required classes at the high school – no exceptions. This includes PE, art and electives.

Oregon Episcopal School – See Mr. Gray for the form to get credit for PE and art.

Westside Christian – Students must arrange to get credit from some accredited organization for PE, art or elective credit that can then transfer to the student’s transcript at Westside. Students should talk to Mr. Ball, Academic Dean, for specific suggestions on who to contact.

Middle School Students – There is no credit requirement for middle school PE. Students should talk to their counselor about an exemption from PE classes.
